Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United can eliminate Champions League holders Bayern Munich from this year’s competition, ESPN
The score is level at 1-1 from the first-leg but Bayern’s away goal arguably gives Pep Guardiola’s side a slight advantage. Bayern are one of the sides favoured by pundits as possible winners of the competition but Rooney says simply being favourites on paper isn’t enough.
“Everyone has their favourites every year – the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich – but it does not always happen,” Rooney said. “When Chelsea won it they nearly went out of the competition three times. We believe we can go through. We have good enough players.”
Rooney is expected to play despite suffering a foot injury, chipping a bone during the first encounter. He added that Bayern are among the best sides remaining in the tournament but United are prepared for the occasion.
“It will be tough. Bayern and Barcelona are the two best teams left in the competition,” Rooney conceded. “We are ready. It’s an exciting game for us all – the players and the fans – and it’s a massive game to be involved in.”
