Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Tim Sherwood has told Paulinho to earn his place in the team, ESPN
Paulinho was signed for £17m during the tenure of Sherwood’s predecessor, Andre Villas-Boas, and recently suggested he wasn’t happy with his role in the side as something short of a regular in the first team.
The 25-year-old hinted that his lack of playing time for Spurs was harming his international career ahead of the World Cup, in his native Brazil this summer.
But Sherwood has replied that Paulinho’s price tag or international prospects won’t be a determining factor in whether or not he is picked – how hard he works in training will carry more weight.
“I pick players on what they are doing in training, not on reputations and price tags,” Sherwood said. “I can’t be worrying if the Brazil national manager wants him to play every week. I am going to do what is best for Tottenham, not any national manager.
“He knows if he trains well and plays well, he stays in the side. He’s come here from another country and the language has been a problem for him. Settling into the Premier League, it’s a different game from what he has been used to.
“It’s very fast with no respite and we play a completely different way to the Brazil team and the team he has come from. He won’t find any Premier League team similar to what he has been used to. But he trains well and wants to be a success.”
Paulinho has made 31 appearances for Tottenham this season, scoring six goals, but he has been out of the line-up since the March 16 defeat to Arsenal, where he entered the game as a 68th minute substitute.
