Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet has insisted that he will not give up in his attempts to keep the club in the Premier League and has called on his players to keep on fighting, reports Goal.com.
Andy Carroll gave the visitors a ninth minute lead at the Stadium of Light, climbing above John O’Shea to head home a corner from the left. The lead was doubled early in the second half when Mohamed Diame’s shot deflected past a helpless Vito Mannone.
The hosts were given hope when Adam Johnson, just minutes after coming on as a substitute, curled a shot home to reduce the deficit, but despite some sustained late pressure from Sunderland, West Ham held on for victory.
Afterwards a disappointed Poyet said: “I try to be honest, that’s what we are all about – that’s it. It hurts yes, it’s sad yes, but if you see this team giving up before the end of the season you won’t see me here.
“If we play like we play against Liverpool and like we did today then we are going to have a great chance. What I believe is that I need to convince the players to keep going.”
