Everton will be looking to move above Arsenal and into the Premier League’s top four by defeating rock-bottom Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Gustavo Poyet conceded that the hosts will need a ‘miracle’ to stay in the Premier League this season after they were thrashed 5-1 at Tottenham on Monday despite taking the lead. Some of the defending on display was extremely poor, but over the course of the season it has been a lack of goals which have cost the Black Cats, who will see this as a must-win game, particularly with trips to Manchester City and Chelsea coming next.
Unfortunately for Sunderland, they come up against a side in Everton that is bang form, full of momentum and brimming with confidence, all instigated by the positive thinking of manager Roberto Martinez. The Toffees played Arsenal off the pitch last time out to leave their destiny in their own hands in the race for fourth, and with five straight wins, it would be tough to bet against them achieving their goal.
For Sunderland, Poyet could decide to abandon his policy of playing with three central defenders, while goalkeeper Kieren Westwood and striker Steven Fletcher are still unavailable through injury.
Leon Osman should be fit for Everton despite being forced off early in the game against Arsenal. Steven Pienaar is pushing for a return, but Phil Jagielka has been ruled out.
