Sunderland’s Colback in demand

A number of Premier League clubs are interested in Sunderland’s Jack Colback, Sky Sports has reported, with the midfielder’s contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Colback is a graduate of the Sunderland academy but is expected to depart once his current deal runs out after the club and player failed to agree terms on an extension. It is thought Colback could still remain at the Stadium of Light but that is dependent on Sunderland staying in the Premier League.

Following Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City, Gus Poyet’s side are six points adrift of safety with six games to play. The Black Cats have a game in hand on the three teams directly above and face Chelsea on Sunday.

Colback has been at Sunderland his entire career, barring two loan spells with Ipswich Town. He could be reunited with former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, now at Hull City, with the Tigers said to be one of the sides keeping tabs on developments.

Everton are also said to be monitoring Colback, while Sunderland’s rivals Newcastle United are understood to be in the frame as well.

Colback has made 131 appearances for the Mackems, scoring four goals. He was part of the Sunderland team that drew with City at the Etihad Stadium this week.
