Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that the club would have been competing for the Premier League title but for the spate of injuries that afflicted his squad, ESPN
The Gunners were top of the table only a few months ago but have since slipped to fourth, 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool. The Reds hammered Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield in February at a point the London club still led the way.
Wenger believes losing the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey left his squad unable to sustain their title challenge. “I feel this season we lost key players at a big important moment of the season,” Wenger said.
“At the moment we have too many players out and it’s important we get them back. We know that at this period of the season to have this number of players out is too many. Our main task [next summer] will be to keep the team together and think where did we go wrong,” Wenger continued.
“There are a lot of positives in our season as well, but we have dropped off when we lost our players at an important moment of the season. That is what we don’t want to repeat.”
Having lost 3-0 to Everton on Sunday, Arsenal are in danger of missing out of next year’s Champions League. Should the Toffees beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday they would move two points clear of Arsenal with only a handful of games to play this season.
