Arsenal boss Wenger looking at Martinez, but faces competition from Barcelona

Arsenal will face competition from Spanish giants Barcelona in the race to land £30m-rated Bayern Munich defender Javi Martinez, according to The Daily Mail.

With the Gunners’ hopes of landing Beyer Leverkusen star Lars Bender appearing to fade, the north Londoners have been alerted to the possibly future availability of Martinez, who has grown unsettled at the Allianz Arena after struggling to find a regular run in the first team under Pep Guardiola.

Martinez is a versatile player, proving himself more than competent either in defence as well as midfield, and this versatility is seen as something that could serve Arsenal well given that their current campaign was arguably derailed by a growing injury list across the park.

However, Barcelona are also thought to be keen to add him to their ranks, and sources close to the player have indicated that he has the Catalan more prominently on his mind as his preferred destination.

The Germans value the defender at around £30m, and it is not believed that this would pose a problem for Barca, who may well exceed this valuation in their offer if it means keeping other clubs – such as Arsenal themselves – out of the running.

The news represents a second transfer blow in as many weeks for Emirates boss Arsene Wenger, though neither player is off the radar just yet. Bender recently stated that he does not feel ready to take a pivotal role at another big club, but it is thought that if Wenger can somehow convince the German international that he could do a job at the club, the deal may be back on.
