Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin looks set to be the main focal point of a scouting visit by Arsenal when Saints take on Man Utd at St. Mary’s in the final game of the season on Sunday, reports The
The 24-year-old joined Southampton in 2008 from Strasbourg for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.2m, and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the south coast club. He has also represented France at every level between U-16 to U-21, and was thought to have attracted interest from Arsenal at the time.
With Mikel Arteta moving in to the final 12 months of his existing deal in north London, and Matthieu Flamini regarded more as a fallback option as opposed to a regular starter, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to add a dynamic midfielder to the ranks – and at 24, Schneiderlin has the youth and vitality that fits his fellow Frenchman’s bill.
Southampton chief executive Les Reed stated recently that no contact has been made between the club and any potential suitors, with several big names being linked with moves away from St. Mary’s in the summer.
However, Wenger could be set to go in with an offer of up to £15m for the midfielder, and with the future of current Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino up in the air at present it is hoped that the offer of stability could tempt Schneiderlin to make the switch.
The player cuts a popular figure at Southampton, however, and the club will not want to lose one of their prized assets without a fight.
