Barkley not for sale, says Everton boss Martinez

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that midfielder Ross Barkley will not be for sale this summer regardless of the impact he makes at the World Cup, ESPN has reported.

Barkley was selected in England’s 23-man squad for Brazil by Roy Hodgson after producing a series of impressive performances for the Toffees, in what was very much a breakthrough season for the youngster, as he scored seven goals in 38 appearances in all competitions.

The 20-year-old’s form has led to fears that he could be the target of clubs taking part in the Champions League, but Martinez insists he will not be leaving Goodison Park. “Ross is probably the best English talent I have ever seen, but he is not the finished article yet and you need to be very careful,” said the Spaniard. ‘It’s our duty to protect him and I know Everton is the perfect place for him for the next 12 months.

“In football obviously you can never speak about the future. Obviously we need to come along and try to get into the top-four positions to offer players like Ross the next stage of their development. Ross is delighted at Everton and feels very much that he is in the right place at the right time of his career.”
