Chelsea edge closer to Costa deal

Chelsea’s hopes of signing Atletico Madrid star Diego Costa have improved after the Spanish club began making a move for Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca, who they see as a potential replacement, according to the Daily Star.

The Blues have long been linked with a move for Costa as manager Jose Mourinho looks to sign a world-class striker this summer, and formal negotiations between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid after Costa helped his side defeat Mourinho’s men 3-1 in their Champions League semi-final second leg.

A bid in the region of £40m is expected to be made, with a swap deal for Romelu Lukaku among the possible deals that have been mooted. The option to extend goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ loan deal for a fourth season could also be included.

And Chelsea’s hopes of signing the 25-year-old have been improved after reports in Spain suggested that Atletico were lining up Bacca as a replacement. Set to represent Colombia at this summer’s World Cup, the Sevilla man has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season, 14 of which have come in La Liga.
