Chelsea defender Ashley Cole looks set to leave after revealing on Twitter that he is unlikely to earn a contract extension, BBC
The left-back’s current deal finishes at the end of June, and although Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has spoken of his desire to keep him at Stamford Bridge, it now looks unlikely, particularly with Cole not guaranteed regular first-team football for next season.
This season, his eighth as a Chelsea player, has proved a frustrating one. From November onwards, the former England international has found himself behind Cesar Azpilicueta in the pecking order, and has been unable to reclaim his place thanks to a series of impressive performances from the Spaniard.
And on Twitter on Monday evening, Cole appeared to confirm that he was departing the West London club. He said: “I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent. Sadly, it does not look like Chelsea will be one of them.”
“Now I’ll be looking for another journey in my life. I hope it can be like my others, full of fun and of course win something. “Thank you Chelsea for making my eight years a pleasure. We’ve been through a lot, good and bad. And of course the fans. How do I start, I can only say thank you for giving the boys confidence to win some amazing trophies.’
