Fiorentina eye move for Arsenal midfielder

Mikel Arteta has emerged as a potential transfer target of Serie A side Fiorentina as contract talks with current club Arsenal continue to stall, the Daily Mail is reporting.

Arteta helped the Gunners claim their first major silverware in nine years after they beat Hull 3-2 in extra time to claim the FA Cup, but with only 12 months left on his current deal he has hit out at the club’s contract policy of only offering players over 30 one year extensions – Arteta is 32-years-old.

Arteta said: “I don’t value players by age. For me, a much bigger asset is someone who has played 125 games in three years compared to someone who played 25, if he is 20-years-old. I know what else I can give.”

It is thought that Arsene Wenger values the Spanish midfielder highly having signed him for around £10m on a four year deal back in 2011, after Cesc Fabregas left for Barcelona.

However it is unlikely the Arsenal boss will push the boat out to break the club’s current policies, meaning any swoop from Fiorentina could well come to fruition.

The Serie A side finished fourth this season and qualified for the Europa League, but will lose three loanees this summer and are looking to strengthen.
