Hull target Sunderland winger Johnson

Hull City are lining up a £5m bid for Sunderland winger Adam Johnson, as manager Steve Bruce looks to bolster his squad for next season, according to the Daily Mail.

Bruce is a fan of the 26-year-old, who has also played for Middlesbrough and Manchester

City as well as earning 12 senior England international caps. However, Black Cats boss Gustavo Poyet would be willing to let Johnson leave his hometown club as he sets about re-shaping the squad at the Stadium of Light.

Johnson’s inconsistency may also be a factor. He ended the season with 10 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions,, but despite winning the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for January, he failed to perform strongly on a regular basis and found himself in and out of the team towards the end of the campaign.

The Tigers are looking to build on their 16th placed finish this season, and add more quality to a squad that tailed off significantly in the final weeks. They are also rumoured to be interested in Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who is set to leave North London this summer. The Dane previously played under Bruce at Sunderland.
