Man Utd legend Sir Bobby Charlton has given the club’s supporters his guarantee that the Red Devils will finish above rivals Man City next season, according to BBC
Speaking at United’s Player of the Year awards, Charlton acknowledged that the team have struggled to keep anywhere near City this season, but said that things will be different next season as he believes the red half of Manchester will once again rise to become number one in the city.
He also promised that whoever takes the job on a permanent basis will be given “significant funds to spend.”
“Next year I guarantee that we will be number one in Manchester. We like to be first and we will be first,” he said.
“We will have to buy a couple of players, which will happen. I am looking forward a lot to next year because Manchester United is not renowned for being second.”
Charlton, who holds the goalscoring record at the club – a record he accrued during 758 appearances in the red shirt – is now a director at Man Utd, and has often been seen sitting alongside former manager Sir Alex Ferguson during games this season.
Also during the ceremony, interim player-manager Ryan Giggs was handed a lifetime achievement award for his longstanding services to the club, while goalkeeper David De Gea was awarded both the supporters’ player of the year and players’ player of the year awards.
Man United finish their season by taking on Southampton at St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.
