It has been announced that Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer has passed away at the age of 85, BBC
The American led a controversial takeover of the club back in 2005, which was met with mass protests from supporters. Despite the anger and disillusionment, Glazer bought Man Utd along with the rest of his family for a fee of £790m.
Since the takeover took place, Man Utd have had a hugely successful spell, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008, and three League Cups, in 2006, 2009 and 2010. But despite owning the club for nine years, Glazer never went to Old Trafford during his reign.
The majority shares in the club are now held by Glazer’s six children, with two of them – Avram and Joel – in charge of the day-to-day running of the club. They have held that position since 2006 when the tycoon, who also owned American football’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, suffered a stroke.
“The thoughts of everyone at Manchester United are with his family,” said a Man Utd spokesperson.
