Mertesacker wants World Cup win to follow Arsenal success

Germany international Per Mertesacker is aiming to follow Arsenal’s FA Cup triumph with success in the World Cup, the Daily Mail has reported.

Mertesacker has told the German Press that having been part of the Gunners’ 3-2 win over Hull City earlier in May, he has the taste of silverware and wants more with the national team.

“Winning the FA Cup has given me a lot of confidence,” the centre-back said. “It has set me up to get another highlight, something which I can definitely achieve.

“[Germany] want to go further than we have been in previous competitions,” Mertesacker added. “Those who have watched us know what that means. We don’t want to constantly only reach third place.”

Mertesacker also feels that he is coming into the World Cup on the back of a good season with his club. “The last season was definitely the best I have had since I joined Arsenal,” he said. “I was injury free and was playing regularly. I now feel I have arrived in England – that I have made something of myself there.”

The 29-year-old has made more than 100 appearances for Arsenal after joining from Werder Bremen in 2012. He also has almost 100 caps for Germany and has played at two World Cups and one European Championships.
