The Gunners did have an option to re-sign Vela, who has spent the last three years with La Real, initially on loan and then a two-year permanent deal. Arsenal could have re-signed Vela but chose not to, with the Basque club confirming they had completed talks with the Premier League side over the player.
“Real Sociedad have reached an agreement with Arsenal for Carlos Vela to continue at the Txuri Urdin club,” a statement from Anoeta said. “Real Sociedad have also reached an agreement with Carlos Vela to renew his contract for the next four seasons. The previous agreement finished in 2016. The Mexican striker has already signed his new contract.”
Vela has been prolific in La Liga for Sociedad, scoring 47 times in 126 games, with Sociedad finishing fourth in 2012-13 and seventh last season. He previously netted 11 goals in 64 appearances under Arsene Wenger and said he is delighted to have his future sorted.
“I’ve also said that this is my home, I’m very happy in San Sebastian, which is what I told the president when he asked me about my intentions,” Vela said. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but fortunately things have turned out well and all parties are happy.
“This club, this team, have the ambition to carry on improving and I’m convinced we’re going to have an exciting year,” Vela continued. “Now I’m going to enjoy the last few days of holiday with my family and then be able to prepare for the season in the best fashion.”
