Cesar Azpilicueta isn’t fearing for his Chelsea place next season, according to Sky
Azpilicueta played most of last season at left-back, despite being naturally right-sided. But with the player he dislodged from Jose Mourinho’s team, Ashley Cole, expected to leave the club this summer as his contract expires, it’s expected Chelsea will sign a new natural left-back.
Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis is thought to be the player wanted by Mourinho and the Brazilian’s arrival could potentially limit Azpilicueta’s playing time in the position he made his own last season. But, the former Marseille man says having your place challenged is to be expected at a club of Chelsea’s stature.
“When you play in a top team, there’s always a lot of competition for spots,” he said. “I always fought for my spot with respect to all my team-mates and will continue doing so.”
Azpilicueta is part of the Spain squad defending the World Cup this summer, named by Vicente Del Bosque alongside Atletico’s Juanfran as La Roja’s two right-backs. He has made 92 appearances for Chelsea in his two seasons at the club, moving from Marseille in 2012, and has half-a-dozen international caps to his name.
