Chelsea linked with Fabregas swoop

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas could make a Premier League return with Chelsea, according to a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.

It’s claimed that the Blues have identified the former Arsenal captain as a replacement for Frank Lampard, who has been linked with a move to the MLS and New York City FC, the franchise joint-owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees.

Lampard’s contract at Stamford Bridge has expired and it’s not yet known if he will stay at the club, having joined Chelsea from West Ham in 2001. Lampard, part of England’s squad for the World Cup, is Chelsea’s record goal scorer and has made more than 600 appearances for the club. He also has more than 100 caps for England.

Fabregas began his career at Barca but moved to Arsenal as a teenager. He graduated to the Gunners’ first team and later captained the side before returning to Catalonia in 2011. He played more than 300 times under Arsene Wenger after making his debut in the League Cup in the 2003-04 season.
