Newcastle United are set to make their first permanent signing since January 2013, with Jack Colback on the brink of joining from arch rivals Sunderland, the Guardian
Colback will join on a free transfer, with the deal expected to be announced in the next week. Newcastle have beaten off competition from Aston Villa and West Ham United for his signature, despite the Hammers offering a contract which would have seen his salary quadrupled.
Instead, the 24-year-old would prefer to stay in the North East and join his boyhood club. He scored against them for Sunderland back in February, one of five goals he has managed in 135 senior appearances for the Black Cats.
Despite manager Gustavo Poyet’s willingness to keep him at the Stadium of Light, Colback now looks set to follow Craig Gardner and Phil Bardsley out of the exit door. His contract expires this summer, and he has turned down the offer of a new contract.
For Newcastle, it represents their first signing since Lee Charnley was appointed as the club’s managing director, who has also agreed a deal to sign young Tenerife striker Ayoze Perez, who will join the Magpies’ development squad.
