Everton have opened talks with midfielder Ross Barkley over a new contract as they look to secure the youngster’s long-term future at the club, according to Goal.com.

Last term saw the 20-year-old break into the Everton first-team, and he established himself as a regular with confident and combative performances, hitting seven goals overall in his 38 appearances in all competitions.
The Toffees are now willing to double his weekly salary to £40,000 in order to keep him at Goodison Park, while the club is firmly claiming that Barkley is not for sale this summer.
Manager Roberto Martinez is also looking to tie midfielder James McCarthy down to an improved contract to secure his future at the club. He is also hoping to sign Gareth Barry on a permanent basis from Manchester City after a successful loan spell.
