Ferdinand rejects Aston Villa move

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has rejected the chance to sign for Aston Villa on a free transfer, according to the Daily Star.

Ferdinand has just left Man Utd after the Red Devils decided not to renew his contract. Over his 12-year stay at Old Trafford, he became renowned as one of the best central defenders in Premier League history, winning six English titles, an FA Cup, three League cups and the Champions League.

Last season, however, he found first-team opportunities harder to come by, and despite rumours he could retire this summer, Ferdinand insisted upon leaving Man Utd that he was keen to play on for at least one more season.

He has been the subject of reported interest from newly-promoted Queens Park Rangers, as well as clubs in the MLS, and he has now turned down the chance to join Villa, who were looking to sign Ferdinand alongside Philippe Senderos, who they signed from Valencia on Thursday evening.

With the club having been put up for sale, Villa boss Paul Lambert is only able to sign players on free transfers as things stand.
