Keown understands Fabregas decision

Arsenal legend Martin Keown agrees with Arsene Wenger’s decision not to bring Cesc Fabregas back to the Emirates Stadium, according to talkSPORT.

It seems that Cesc Fabregas will not be rejoining his former club Arsenal. The north London club had a contractual option to re-sign their former player from Barcelona, but boss Wenger decided against putting Fabregas back in the famous red and white shirt.

Title-winning defender Martin Keown agrees with his former boss’ choice, feeling that with the likes of England internationals Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere in the squad, the signing of Fabregas is not necessary. He also suggested that Wenger would not want to block the progress of such young talents by bringing back a former star.

Reports indicate that while Fabregas is returning to London, it will be to Chelsea rather than his former club, and with a price tag of nearly £30 million, he does not come cheap, and Keown feels that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Keown claimed: “I do believe Fabregas would improve any team in the world so of course, he deserves special consideration but there are only so many £30m players you can buy every summer.

“Arsene Wenger has just signed a new three-year contract and I’m not sure he’ll be signing another one so he might think if he’s going to spend £30m, he would prefer it to be on a centre forward than another midfielder.”

Fabregas spent eight years at Arsenal, a period which qualified him as a homegrown player under Premier League rules. However, the decision to join a London rival might not be the easiest choice, according to Keown. His future may be decided in the coming days.
