Manchester United look set to miss out on top defensive target Mats Hummels after reports in Germany suggested that Borussia Dortmund would not allow him to leave, according to the Daily
Hummels, who is currently with the Germany squad ahead of the World Cup, was seen by new Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal as a major summer target for the Red Devils, but he is reportedly happy to stay at the Westfalenstadion, and Dortmund are highly unwilling to let the play go.
The 25-year-old’s father recently stated that he knew nothing of any transfer deal with Man Utd, saying: “I know Louis van Gaal from his time at Bayern Munich. He’s not contacted me about Mats moving to Manchester [United] though. I have heard some rumours but Mats is happy at Dortmund at the moment, and only thinking about the World Cup.”
Despite suffering this setback in their pursuit of Hummels, Man Utd are in talks with Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger’s representatives over a possible move, with the Premier League club having impressed on the player just how much they want to sign him.
It now remains to be seen whether a deal can be agreed with the German champions for Schweinsteiger, who has spent his entire career with the club, but does not completely fit into current manager Josep Guardiola’s plans.
