Release clause met for Man Utd target Herrera

Reports in Spain have confirmed that the release clause for Athletic Bilbao midfielder and Manchester United target Ander Herrera has been met.

Cadena Ser have reported that Herrera has met his release clause as Spanish football regulations stipulate he has to do. United had an offer rejected by Athletic for the player earlier today but Herrera’s actions pave the way for a transfer to the Premier League club.

The release clause effectively sees Herrera’s contract terminated and the President of the Basque club, Jose Urrutia, expressed his sadness at the development. “Athletic should aim for players whose first choice is to defend the shirt of this club and Ander Herrera is not aligned with that idea, which is a disappointment,” he said.

Urrutia added that there were two conditions in which he would let Herrera leave – the payment of the buyout clause and the player expressing a desire to leave, and both of which have now happened.

“[The transfer] does not alter our philosophy and our way of conceiving how the club must work,” Urrutia continued. “We have a squad of players with great potential and we continue on with the same determination.”
