Ribery out of World Cup

Bayern Munich and France winger Franck Ribery has been ruled out of the World Cup due to a back injury, the Guardian reports.

Ribery, 31, scored five goals for Les Bleus in their qualifying campaign in which they finished second to Spain in Group I and overcame Ukraine in a play-off to reach the finals in Brazil.

At a press conference today in Clairefontaine, France coach Didier Deschamps said of the 2013 Ballon d’Or nominee: “This morning before the collective training session…he had to stop, the pain was too strong. We have made checks in the beginning of the afternoon, checks that confirmed the situation has aggravated and he is today not capable of training for a few weeks, let alone play a game.”

Ribery, with 81 caps, would have been the most capped player in the French squad and this would have been his third World Cup having previously played in Germany in 2006, where France lost in the final to Italy, and South Africa in 2010, where they exited at the group stage without winning a game.
