England striker Wayne Rooney has offered his apologises to fans after the squad were left ‘gutted’ by their early exit from the World Cup, reports the Telegraph.
With the national side now condemned to their earliest exit since 1958 Rooney took to his Facebook page to reflect on a miserable campaign in Brazil.
Rooney said: “Devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out.
“Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven’t done better…gutted!”
With elimination confirmed, Roy Hodgson’s side travel to unbeaten Costa Rica knowing anything other than victory will see them slump to their worst display at the tournament in the country’s history of the competition.
Rooney himself has failed to live up to expectations at another World Cup having fought calls for him to be dropped from the starting XI, although the striker did manage to break his finals hoodoo and finally score at the tournament – at the third time of asking.
