Senna backs Costa to star in Brazil

Former Spain midfielder Marcos Senna has tipped Chelsea bound Diego Costa to be player of the tournament in Brazil, The Daily Star reports.

Senna, who was a member of the Spain squad that won Euro 2008, believes that Costa won’t be overwhelmed by the pressure and can continue his outstanding club form which saw him score 36 goals in 52 games this season.

“He is a star, and I have been telling him that he will do as well for Spain as he has done for Atletico. Diego is very prepared psychologically and he’s going to have a great World Cup.”

Brazilian-born Costa, who made two appearances for five-time World Cup winners in 2013, will lead the line for his adopted country in the land of his birth this summer and Senna believes that he has all the support he needs.

“There are some people who do not agree with what he has done but there are also people who support him. The most important thing is that he is focused and demonstrates what a great player he is.”

Spain manager Vicente del Bosque has said that he hopes the selection of Costa will not provoke a negative reaction from the Brazilian fans. “There will be moments when our rivalry will mean we aren’t exactly loved in Brazil, but in general, I don’t think it will be any worse because he is playing for us. He decided to take up citizenship and play for us. He achieved a lot with his club this season with his goals, his fight and enthusiasm. A player with these characteristics isn’t exactly a bad thing for us”.
