Argentina have proved people wrong, says Aguero

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has said that his side have proved a lot of people wrong by reaching the final of the World Cup, BBC Sport has reported.

With both sides adopting a cautious approach, neither side created many chances in 120 minutes of football, with Argentine substitute Rodrigo Palacio heading straight at Jasper Cillessen with the best opportunity in extra time, meaning the game went to penalties.

Aguero was one of four Argentina players who netted from the spot, with Maxi Rodriguez smashing home the decisive kick after goalkeeper Sergio Romero had saved from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder. Alejandro Sabella’s team now play Germany in the final on Sunday at the Maracana as they aim for their third World Cup win.

And after the game, Aguero insisted that he and his teammates have proved the doubters wrong at this tournament. He said: “A lot of people didn’t think Argentina would get to the final but we knew what players we had, very good players individually. This means so much.”

Maxi Rodriguez added: “We know the pain we have been through, and we deserved some kind of happiness. Now we have to play the final but that is what we have dreamed of ever since we left Buenos Aires. We must make the most of it and let’s hope that the last 90 minutes are on our side.’
