Arsenal have completed the signing of Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £35m, the Guardian
He becomes the first player to join Arsenal this summer, becoming their second most expensive buy after the £42m spent for Mesut Ozil in August 2013. The Gunners have beaten off interest from Liverpool for his signature, but the player’s preference was a move to North London.
Sanchez leaves Barcelona despite hitting 19 goals in La Liga last season. The Catalans’ new boss, Luis Enrique, is willing to allow the Chilean to leave after three years at the club, where he helped them to the Spanish title in 2012.
The 25-year-old has signed a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium, and upon completing the move he said: “I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London.
“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy.”
Manager Arsene Wenger was also delighted to complete the deal, saying a statement: “Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks.
‘He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad. I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club.”
