Mikel Arteta wants to stay at Arsenal despite interest from Serie A side Fiorentina, ESPN
His agent, Inaki Ibanez, has denied being in contact with the Italians and insisted that Arteta, who regularly captained the Gunners last season in the absence of Thomas Vermaelen, wants to stay in the Premier League and shoulder the responsibility of leading Arsene Wenger’s team.
“I have never spoken with Fiorentina,” Ibanez said. “Mikel has one year more on his contract and he has no desire to go away from Arsenal. He’s fine there and he’s also the team’s captain. I have not spoken with any club.
“If he’d like to come to Fiorentina? No, we’re talking about Arsenal’s captain, with all due respect to Fiorentina, he is fine there and he does not want to leave.”
Arteta moved to Arsenal from Everton in the summer 2011 transfer window. He’s thus far made more than 100 appearances under Wenger, having played over 200 times for the Toffees following his January 2005 move from Real Sociedad.
The 32-year-old began his career at Barcelona and has also represented Paris Saint-Germain and Rangers, winning the title, the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup during his time in Glasgow.
