Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt believes his old club have a good signing in Ander Herrera, but warns he needs time to reach the level of a Paul Pogba or Toni Kroos, according to ESPN.
Butt, a coach at United who also scouted for the club last year, acknowledged that Herrera isn’t currently one of the world’s best midfielders but feels he could get there in the future once he settled into his new surroundings.
“[Herrera] was at the level where you just had to take note of this player because there are not many top midfielders you can get,” Butt said. “You can all talk about Pogba or Kroos but these kind of players are not easy to get. So you have to widen your net and Herrera is a bonus.
“He is at a level where he can play at a club like United and given a bit of time he can excel,” the ex-Newcastle man continued. “I watched Ander a few times last season on scouting trips. He impressed me. He can become a star player for us. He can become a big influence on our midfield [but] you will have to be patient with him.”
Herrera made more than 100 appearances for Athletic after moving to the Basque club from Real Zaragoza in 2011. He left Bilbao having helped Ernesto Valverde’s side into the Champions League for next season, Los Leones finishing fourth in La Liga.
Butt, meanwhile, began his career at United and also represented Newcastle, Birmingham City and South China, making almost 400 appearances for the Red Devils, winning the Premier League title on six occasions.
