Chelsea have made a renewed bid for Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis, according to ESPN.
But Atletico won’t let Filipe go for less than his buyout clause, which is understood to be around £19m. Chelsea could be forced to meet the clause as they did for Atletico striker Diego Costa, who has moved to Stamford Bridge for around £32m.
Atletico are said to be eager to keep together as much of the squad that claimed last season’s La Liga title as possible, with Costa among the departures. David Villa has left to join MLS side New York City FC while Thibaut Courtois’ loan from Chelsea has expired.
Chelsea allowed Ashley Cole to leave on a free-transfer, the former England defender since joining Roma, and Filipe has been identified as his replacement.
The 28-year-old began his career in his native Brazil and later played for the Real Madrid B team, Real Madrid Castilla, moving to Atletico in 2010 after a spell with Deportivo La Coruna. Filipe has four caps for Brazil but didn’t make the World Cup squad.
