Deschamps proud after France victory

France boss Didier Deschamps has said he was proud of his side’s performance as they beat Nigeria 2-0 on Monday to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Sky Sports has reported.

It was a tight game for long periods with Nigeria often having the better of things. Emmanuel Emenike had a goal disallowed for a tight offside call, while at the other end Vincent Enyeama saved well from Paul Pogba’s flying volley.

The introduction of Antoine Griezmann midway through the second half seemed to help France, and they took the lead with nine minutes to go when Enyeama palmed a corner straight on to the head of Pogba, who found the net. Les Bleus then added a second in stoppage time when Joseph Yobo turned a low cross into his own net.

After the game, Deschamps was delighted with his side’s effort as they booked a meeting with Germany on Friday. He said: “I am very proud of everything we did from the start. There was tension out there. They are a very strong side and there were a lot of duels. But we’re through. We’re in the quarter finals and we’ll do everything we can to go a stage further.”
