Dutch star Janmaat joins Newcastle

Full back Daryl Janmaat has completed a transfer from Feyenoord to Newcastle United, Sky Sports has confirmed.

The 24-year-old finalised the move for an undisclosed fee, and signed a six-year contract with the Magpies. On signing, Janmaat acknowledged the prestigious nature of his new employees, saying: “This is a fantastic club, with a big history and a great stadium. I have also been told all about how great the fans are.”

He also expressed his excitement about the year to come. “This is the perfect move for me, and I am really looking forward to being with the team and getting started here at Newcastle,” he said, predicting immediate success for the Tyneside club. “I think we are going to have a great season.”

Janmaat began his career with ADO Den Haag, then after four successful years with Heerenveen made the move to Rotterdam giants Feyenoord in 2012. He went on to make 74 appearances in all competitions in his two years at De Kuip, including starts in the Champions League and Europa League.

His domestic form earned him a regular place in the Dutch national team squad, and he made five appearances at the recent World Cup, starting all three of the Netherlands’ group stage games. He was also credited with assists in the games against Spain and Brazil as the Oranje claimed third place in the tournament.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew hopes that Janmaat will carry his positive World Cup experience into the new season. “Daryl had an excellent World Cup and we are looking forward to him continuing that form for Newcastle,” said the Magpies boss.

Janmaat will fill the full back slot at St James’ Park vacated by Mathieu Debuchy, who recently joined Premier League rivals Arsenal. “He is the perfect example of a modern full-back, someone who is good defensively but offers a real threat going forward as well,” said Pardew, expressing his delight to have found such a high calibre replacement.

Janmaat joins fellow Dutch international Siem de Jong as one of a number of new arrivals at Newcastle this summer, as the Magpies seek to improve upon their 10th place finish in last season’s Premier League.
