Ferdinand on brink of QPR move

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is set to reach a deal to join newly promoted Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday, according to Sky Sports.

The 35-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season, having not been offered a contract extension by the club. He has been heavily linked with QPR ever since, after declaring that he would like to extend his playing career.

In the initial negotiations, the two parties struggled to agree on a deal, but a revised offer has now been made by QPR, and Ferdinand now looks certain to move to Loftus Road, where his brother Anton spent two years as a player between 2011 and 2013.

He will be QPR’s first signing since they secured an immediate return to the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Derby County in the Championship play-off final in May, as Harry Redknapp aims to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season. Ferdinand left Man Utd after 12 years with the club, and has also previously played under Redknapp at West Ham United.
