Huntelaar puts Liverpool on hold

Striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar has confirmed he will continue to discuss new terms with his current club Schalke 04 before considering any possible transfer, according to Sky Sports.

Speculation is rife that Liverpool are lining up the Dutch international as a potential replacement for Luis Suarez should the controversial Uruguayan make his much discussed move to Barcelona.

But speaking to Dutch media from Brazil where he is currently with the Netherlands national team at the World Cup, he confirmed that he was already in talks over a new contract with Schalke, and that these discussions would take priority.

“Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first,” said Huntelaar. “I’ve talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.”

The 30-year-old has played for some of Europe’s most prestigious names in his career to date. An extremely impressive strike rate for Ajax earned him a big money move to Real Madrid. After just six months in Spain he moved on again, to Italy with AC Milan. However, he failed to have the desired impact at the San Siro, finding himself unable to tie down a starting place.

After making just 11 Serie A starts, he was sold to Schalke in August 2010 and there rediscovered some of the form that made him such a valuable commodity earlier in his career. To date he has scored 59 goals in 100 Bundesliga appearances for the North Rhine-Westphalia club.

For now though, Huntelaar’s attention is firmly on the World Cup quarter final clash with Costa Rica, with all domestic thoughts put to one side. “With my agent, I now do not talk about the interest from clubs. I focus on the tournament,” said the striker.
