Jones welcomes van Gaal tactics at Man Utd

Phil Jones believes the tactics Louis van Gaal intends to deploy at Manchester United will take root and lead to success for the new Coach, ESPN has reported.

United took a 7-0 win over LA Galaxy from van Gaal’s first friendly and used a back three, with Jones playing alongside Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans. The England international said after the match he was pleased with the outcome and says the squad are determined to make it work.

“We played three at the back, with Luke [Shaw] and Antonio [Valencia] as wing-backs, and it worked,” he added. “It’s a learning process, but we’re getting used to it.

“This is the first time I’ve played three at the back – every manager has got his philosophy, and we’re all pulling in the right direction.”

Jones added that he hopes to replace the void left by Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who have left the clubs on free transfers – Ferdinand joining Queens Park Rangers and Vidic signing for Inter.

“That’s ultimately what I want to be doing,” he continued. “Everyone is trying to impress, and hopefully we can start the season off well.

“We’ve lost two great defenders in Rio and Nemanja, but that’s football and we move on. We’ve got good players to replace them, and hopefully we can all step up.”

Jones moved to Old Trafford from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2011 and has gone on to make 104 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring five goals. He also has 10 England caps and played against Costa Rica at this summer’s World Cup.
