Liverpool are reported to be ready to move for Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand as boss Brendan Rodgers continues his search for a new left back, according to The
It’s no secret that Rodgers is desperate to fill the hole on the left side of the Liverpool defence, but has so far been unsuccessful in his pursuit of his preferred targets.
The Reds’ interest in Sevilla’s 22-year-old Spanish international Alberto Moreno became an on-off saga which appears to have permanently hit the buffers, with the Andalusian club refusing to lower their asking price, said to be around £16 million.
Rodgers also set his sights on Ben Davies, who came through the ranks at Rodgers’ former club Swansea City. However, the 21-year-old Welsh international chose to join Tottenham instead, leaving Liverpool with a vacancy still to fill.
It appears now that Rodgers will turn his attention back to Bertrand, who he has been keeping tabs on for more than a year. Liverpool initially made an offer during the January transfer window this year, but this was rejected and Bertrand opted for a loan stint with Aston Villa instead.
Bertrand made 16 Premier League starts for the Villains, only five less than he has made for Chelsea since joining them as a teenager in 2005. Since moving to Stamford Bridge, he has spent most of his time out on loan, with previous spells at AFC Bournemouth, Reading, Oldham Athletic, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest.
It is thought that Chelsea will demand at least £8 million for the 24-year-old, a price which Liverpool may be unwilling to match.
