Liverpool summer spending to continue

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has money in the bank and is intending to continue spending it, according to Sky Sports.

Since the end of last season Rodgers has already captured the signatures of international stars Lazar Markovic and Emre Can, as well as Southampton’s England World Cup pair Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert for a combined total of almost £60 million.

But having seen controversial Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez depart Merseyside for Barcelona in a big money move, funds are available for further strengthening.

Rodgers had been hoping to bring Chilean international forward Alexis Sanchez to Anfield, however the former Barcelona man has chosen to join Arsenal instead, with Rodgers claiming his choice was one dictated by location. “That was one where geography dictated where he wanted to go – simple as that,” said Rodgers. “It wasn’t due to a lack of ambition by the club. It was about where the player and his family wanted to choose to live.”

Liverpool have been linked with a further raid on Southampton, with Dejan Lovren reported to be high on Rodgers’ wish list, and the Croatian international expressing his desire to move to a bigger club. The likes of Loic Remy and Wilfreid Bony have been recently linked with moves to Anfield, along with neighbours Everton’s Ross Barkley and PSV Eindhoven’s teenage Belgian international prospect Zakaria Bakkali.

But Rodgers stated that Liverpool will still be choosing their transfer targets carefully, despite having extra money to play with. “We certainly won’t spend just for the sake of spending. It has to be the sort of player who is going to improve us,” he said, also confirming that he would not be seeking a like-for-like replacement for Suarez.
