Manchester City are considering an approach for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia, ESPN
It’s said that manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to add a new face to his defence after winning the Premier League title last season, with a fee of £30m mooted in the Italian Press for the centre-back.
Eliaquim Mangala was the subject of an offer from City in the January transfer window, the report adds, but City face competition from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea for the France international.
Benatia has been at Roma for a year, moving for just under £11m from Udinese and helping Rudi Garcia’s side to second place in Serie A.
City have this summer released Joleon Lescott, leaving Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis and Matija Nastasic as centre-backs available to Pellegrini.
Only Chelsea conceded fewer goals than City last season, the champions’ net being breached 37 times in 38 games compared to 27 in 38 for the Blues.
The 27-year-old Benatia has more than 30 caps for Morocco and spent three years at Udinese, having moved to the club from Clermont in France.
