Everton manager Roberto Martinez has claimed three or four new players will be unveiled imminently, reports talkSPORT.
Boss Martinez wanted to make a careful assessment of what resources were available to him in terms of young players coming through from the much-vaunted Everton academy before deciding his transfer targets, but he now seems clear in his mind what is still required to make his squad truly competitive.
“The youngsters have done terrific and are showing the good work we are doing in the academy at Finch Farm, but there are areas that need to be strengthened,” confirmed Martinez. “Over the next few days we are going to get the three, four players we need just to finalise the squad facing the huge demands with European football ahead of us.”
Everton’s only new signing so far during this close season is 33-year-old England international midfielder Gareth Barry, who joined permanently from Manchester City after making 37 appearances in all competitions while on loan with the Toffees last season.
Another former loanee, Romelu Lukaku is hotly tipped to be one of the new signings to be confirmed in the coming weeks. Lukaku scored 16 goals in 33 appearances for the Goodison Park outfit while on loan from Chelsea last season.
“Rom fits in really, really well at Goodison,” said Martinez of the powerful 21-year-old Belgian forward. “We created a fantastic bond with the player and the player with the fans and that is something that we would love to extend.”
While no deal has yet been reached, it is thought that Chelsea, for who Lukaku has only made one Premier League start since joining from Anderlecht in 2011, are prepared to let the striker leave should they receive an acceptable offer.
