Diego Poyet is to reject interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Sunderland – managed by his father, Gus Poyet – in order to sign for West Ham, the
The Charlton Athletic midfielder is a free agent and is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Hammers after coming through the Addicks’ academy. Poyet made 23 appearances for Charlton last season, helping the London club retain their Championship status and being named the club’s player of the year.
Poyet was born in Zaragoza – one of his father’s former clubs – but has represented England at youth level, winning caps for the Under 16s and Under 17s. Because of his father’s nationality, Poyet can represent Uruguay as well as Spain and England.
Charlton hoped to keep hold of the 19-year-old but he informed the club he wouldn’t return for pre-season training, with Upton Park thought to be his next destination. Poyet only broke into the Charlton team last season, his 23 games comprising the extent of his first team experience.
West Ham have already confirmed the signings of Mauro Zarate, the Argentine forward, on a free transfer, Ipswich Town left-back Aaron Cresswell and Senegalese defender Cheikhou Kouyate.
