The agent of Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has claimed that a number of clubs have expressed their interest in signing his client this summer, Sky
Although he previously stated in June that he was likely to remain at White Hart Lane next season, there have been widespread rumours that the Belgian was set to move elsewhere after Tottenham’s failure to qualify for the Champions League last season.
He has been in North London for two years, having signed from Ajax in the summer of 2012. Overall, he has made 82 appearances and scored eight goals, form which has seen him linked with Spanish giants Barcelona.
It is rumoured that Luis Enrique is considering the 27-year-old as a possible replacement for Carles Puyol, who announced his retirement at the end of last season. When asked, his agent Mustapha Nakhli was coy about the link, but admitted that there had been interest in Vertonghen from several European clubs.
“Several teams are interested in Jan,” he said. “I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them. Tottenham is not a small club. It’s too soon to give them an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We’ll see.”
