Suarez bite appeal rejected by FIFA

FIFA have confirmed that the appeal of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez against his ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s World Cup game against the Azzurri has been rejected.

Suarez was banned for nine international games and four months from all football but appealed the sanction. The governing body has however rejected appeals from Suarez and the Uruguay FA and confirmed the decision made in June by the disciplinary committee.

A further appeal could be made, for example to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, FIFA add.

Suarez missed Uruguay’s first World Cup game, a 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica, through injury, but returned to score twice against England. Uruguay qualified from Group D alongside Costa Rica but go no further than the Round of 16, when they were knocked out by Colombia.

FIFA had already taken action against Suarez by the time of the Colombia game, with it becoming the first of the nine game he will miss, pending appeal, for his country.

It has been reported elsewhere that Suarez’s proposed move to Barcelona hinges on his appeal, with the proceedings delaying the transfer.
