Sunderland boss Poyet rules out signing Amalfitano

Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet has ruled out the possibility of making an attempt to sign Marseille winger Morgan Amalfitano, the Shields Gazette has reported.

The Frenchman has been linked with Sunderland in recent weeks and touted as a possible replacement for striker Ignacio Scocco, who left the club on Wednesday in favour of a move Newell’s Old Boys in his native Argentina. Scocco only joined in January for £3.2m, but failed to score or even start a Premier League match.

Amalfitano impressed in spending last season on loan in the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion, turning out to be one of their more consistent performers as they struggled to 17th place. However, Poyet has ruled out trying to bring him in this summer, instead reiterating his desire to sign Fabio Borini.

“Right now, I will say there is not a real interest in Amalfitano,’ said the Uruguayan. “I followed him when he was at Lorient before he went to Marseille, so I know the player from four years ago. It was nice to see him in England playing last season.

‘But in that position, we’re looking for a second striker – which will hopefully be Fabio Borini – and pace, whereas Morgan has more ability on the ball.”
