Tottenham are weighing up the possibility of making a bid to sign Aston Villa central defender and captain Ron Vlaar, the Daily
New manager Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to strengthen Tottenham’s defensive options this summer, and he has identified Vlaar as a possible target after his impressive performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup, where he marshalled an organised defence and helped his country to third place.
Vlaar has one year remaining on his current contract at Aston Villa, who are hoping to tie him down to a new deal. He has been at the club for two years, scoring two goals in 65 appearances and narrowly avoiding relegation on both occasions.
Any deal with Spurs is likely to see either attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby or defender Michael Dawson head the other way, with neither set to feature heavily in Pochettino’s plans for the season ahead.
Southampton also hold an interest in Vlaar, with their manager Ronald Koeman eyeing his fellow countryman as a possible replacement for the unsettled Dejan Lovren, who has been heavily linked with Liverpool.
