West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce is close to making his fifth signing of the summer, with Ecuador star Enner Valencia set to arrive from Pachuca, the Daily
The East London club expect to announce the deal in the next 48 hours, having paid £12m to bring the 24-year-old to the Premier League. He will join Argentine striker Mauro Zarate, former Anderlecht midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, Ipswich Town left-back Aaron Cresswell and Charlton Athletic midfielder Diego Poyet in moving to Upton Park this summer.
Valencia was Ecuador’s star player at the World Cup, despite their failure to make it beyond the group stage. After scoring a bullet header against England in a warm-up match in Miami, he went on to score all three of his country’s goals in Brazil, including both in the victory over Honduras in Curitiba.
After seeing his side draw with Stevenage in their opening pre-season friendly, Allardyce said: ‘We’re very close, but nothing is ever certain until they have actually signed.’
As they look to improve on last season’s 13th place, West Ham have set their sights on making at least two more signings after Valencia.
