Arsenal vs Man City – Community Shield preview

FA Cup winners Arsenal take on Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley for the chance to collect the first silverware of the new season.

Due to a trophy drought which lasted nine years until their dramatic come-from-behind victory over Hull City in May, this is Arsenal’s first appearance in this traditional season opener since 2005. For many, it will represent the first chance to see high-profile summer signing Alexis Sanchez in an Arsenal shirt, although he has already appeared in two pre-season matches.

The Chilean could make his competitive debut as well as defenders Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, who have also been signed in what has turned out to be an unusually productive transfer window at the Emirates Stadium as manager Arsene Wenger looks to bridge the gap to City.

Manuel Pellegrini has his eyes set on defending the Premier League title and reaching the latter stages of the Champions League this season as expectations continue to rise among the Man City hierarchy. They were winners of this trophy two years ago in 2012, but did not go on to win anything else that season, so they will be hoping to avoid a repeat.

Summer signing Fernando could make his debut in midfield, while Willy Caballero might be given his first chance to impress in the Man City goal after being brought in from Malaga to provide increased competition to Joe Hart.

A number of players from both sides will miss out due to only recently returning from their holidays following the World Cup, but Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and Man City’s Alvaro Negredo are both set to miss out through injury, while Frank Lampard will not be making his debut for the side in blue.
