Aston Villa have completed the signing of Colombian international midfielder Carlos Sanchez for £4.7m from La Liga side Elche, the Birmingham
The 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal at Villa Park, with the transfer funded by owner Randy Lerner, despite his ongoing attempts to sell the club. He becomes the fifth signing of the summer, after Joe Cole, Philippe Senderos, Kieran Richardson and Aly Cissokho.
Sanchez was a key player for his country as his side produced their best ever World Cup performance in Brazil, playing in the holding midfield role as the South Americans reached the quarter-finals, only to narrowly lose to the hosts in Fortaleza.
He spent just one season with Elche, failing to score in his 31 appearances. Prior to that he was at French side Valenciennes, for whom he netted 10 times in 188 outings. He is likely to make his Villa debut at home to Newcastle United on August 23, as the deal was completed too late for him to be involved at Stoke City on Saturday.
Manager Paul Lambert said of his new acquisition: “Carlos is very experienced, and he played a prominent role in a team which captured the imagination at the World Cup. He’s a great coup for us.”
